I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much hype and social media attention about a product launch in my entire time blogging! The launch of Kylie Cosmetics by Kylie Jenner was huge – you have to admit that girl knows what she’s doing! Kylie is known for her lips and for her fantastic all-round style, so I knew when these were released I needed to pick some up!
I initially picked up Dolce K, Koko K, Candy K and Mary Jo K for myself, as well as others for friends, but have ended up keeping just Koko K and Candy K and passing the others on as I didn’t feel like they suited me. My lovely Instagram friend Kayla sent me through the gloss in So Cute, and that’s completed my little nude collection for now – I definitely want to add more glosses and the shade Exposed to my collection sometimes soon!
Firstly, the packaging. The boxes are original and super cute – Kylie ‘s lips are what are on the cover – go hard or go home! I love the detail and the drips, and think it’s incredibly unique. The boxes are white and black with a similar dripping style – unique branding, and from a PR/Marketing student perspective I can’t give that enough praise!
On that, I also love the design of the tubes themselves. The packaging doesn’t feel cheap or heavy, I love the black and clear design with the dripping, and how it has her signature too. The lip pencils are plainer, but I appreciate how you can see the colour on the ends – easy to pick up out of a collection when they have the specific shade. One thing I will say is that the ‘Kylie’ differs between my Candy K (far left) and Koko K (far right) – I believe I have one of the original Candy’s before they were reformulated.
Onto the product! Firstly, the lip kits themselves, the ones that started it all! The shades are unique depending on your skintone – on me, Candy K is more of a deep mauvey-purple, a more autumn/winter colour, whereas on others it’s a gorgeous nude. Koko on me starts out as a lighter pink, slightly out of my comfort zone, but settles into a beautiful nude after an hour or two – that shade is definitely my favourite!
The formula of the lip pencils is fantastic – super creamy, comfortable to wear, they pair perfectly with the liquid lipsticks and with other lip products as well.
I’ve never been much of a fan of liquid lipsticks, but I really do enjoy these! I do have relatively dry lips and they do settle into my fine lines – but the kicker here is that they don’t dry my lips out, at all. I can wear them from 7am-7pm on a work day and the next morning my lips are fine. Even some regular lipsticks I can’t do that with, so I really am impressed.
They wear well. Candy gave me about 10-11 hours of wear, including eating (including oilier foods such as pasta) before it started to wear off on the edges of the mouth. It felt comfortable the whole time, I often forgot I even had something on my lips. It didn’t feel drying at all, and I love the staying power.
I believe that the Koko I have is one of the newer formulas – not only is the packaging different, but it feels quite drying the moment you apply it to the lips. That settles, however I do find it doesn’t last quite as long. That being said, I do get at least 8 hours of wear before I need to take it off – it’s my go-to shade for work at the moment!
The gloss I own is in the shade So Cute, which looks completely different on me to every other swatch I’ve seen – on me it’s more of a nude-y apricot, which I’m not a fan of. I persisted on wearing it for review purposes, and I damn well am obsessed with the formula! The gloss is exactly what I’m after – it’s pigmented, smooth, not at all sticky and feels like you’re applying lip balm to the lips. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a gloss, and reminds me somewhat of the Urban Decay glosses in formula but more hydrating. This wears for around 4 hours on its own before needing to reapply, including with eating, something that never happens for me with a gloss. I have worn it over a liner, and got similar results. It is the perfect accompaniment to the liquid lipsticks – I applied it over Koko on a day off and didn’t have any problems with it feeling dry – so that’s what I’d recommend if you have similar issues!
Swatches on my NC15 skin – Candy K, So Cute, Koko K. They look slightly different on my lips, more pink-y due to the pigment of my lips, but I just can’t figure out taking good lip swatch photos!
Overall I’m super happy with the investment that I’ve made! They work out at about $55 each including shipping and conversion when you buy multiple, which is slightly on the expensive side for a lipstick and lip pencil, but for the quality I’m happy to pay that price. I think the glosses work out at around $30-$40 Aus each, which is more than I’d probably usually pay! Apart from some small hiccups with the formula of Koko K, I’m definitely impressed with these products and recommend if you have access to a computer and a bank card when they do their sporadic releases!
